Physicians Leadership Academy

Our Purpose:
The Physicians Leadership Academy exists to support physicians by providing leadership training that improves the lives of the members of the community, patients and themselves.

The Physicians Leadership Academy (PLA) was first conceived of in 2013 when then Columbus Medical Association (CMA) CEO, Phil Cass, Ph.D. convened a group of interested CMA members to discuss the possibility of forming a physician-centric leadership academy under the auspices of the CMA. The assembled group was concerned that there was not sufficient voice in leadership positions in the community and recognized that physicians are patients’ greatest advocates. This group also recognized that physician well-being was also a concern that needed to be addressed. They believed that these two needs were related to each other and could be addressed in a highly innovative leadership program. The Columbus Medical Association Foundation (CMAF) funded a year of program development and the PLA was then formed as a program under the CMAF. It was fully incorporated in 2017 as a company under the CMA.

Looking Forward:

With very high marks given by alumni of the program, the PLA continues to grow in numbers of participants and numbers of referral sources. Several prominent medical organizations in Central Ohio now view the PLA as their preferred source for physician leadership training. That list continues to grow. As alumni complete the program they are the greatest source of referrals for the program. Because of the uniqueness of the program, citizens and the community at large are also the beneficiaries of the program.
